Melanerpes fornicivorus
Dark Hollow
3 March Over here with Alan 1030 we do well. ♀509 L6m-D6m/tell
for sure, and ♂584 Metal/BP/15 pretty sure. A few intruders
around when we first walked up, but they were quickly
chased away toward CV2.
Birds are doing very well here, acorn-wise. Surprisingly
well, in fact, for a marginal territory. Probably 1000 or more
acorns, primarily in the low limb (southerly) of the 2 VOs.
Almost all Live Oak acorns, probably from the Large Live Oak 50 m
W of the granary that had such a heavy crop last fall.
8 April A quick look here, 1800, ♂584 presumed here.
plus a ♀. Acorns still stored here.
3 May a stroll by, 1830: Nobody in any holes.
13 May Whoops, 1720, walking over here to look for a nest,

today.
21 May Watching here 1000. Alan learned on 14 May that ♂695
+♀696 of 1800 had moved here! ♀509 is gone.
1100, All 3 birds here, seen well: ♂584, ♂695 ♂696.
What's more, the birds here are prospecting a hole: ♂584
was in tapping for ~5 minutes, then ♂695 entered,
flew out with wood chips, then entered again and looked
out for 10-15 min. ♂696 also took a couple of
looks at the hole. The hole is not great for getting
up to, but is not too bad considering what's available
for this group. It's in the more northerly of
