Melanerpes formicivorus
Buckeye
Hartings Reservation
** 12 Jan ** GROUP UPDATE *
① ♂619 disappeared about 3 Oct ± 2 weeks
Last seen at Y on 21 Sept 1981. Missing at Buckeye 16 Oct,
31 October.
12 April I walk by the 79-80 hole and the 81 granary hole, 1345.
Nobody looking out of either. Still plenty of acorns stored
here.
19 April Another walk by the same two holes, 0630, still nobody
looking out of either.
27 April Another walk past, 1030: Nobody in any holes. I even
checked the 3 holes in the Valley Oak 50 m SSW of
the granary. It seems like they should have a nest
by now.
April
30 Any Again 1730: Still nobody in any holes
1 May Alan watched up here today, and reported birds going
into a hole in the extreme tip of the last live branch
of the granary. I walk up at 1630 and indeed find
a ♀ (!) looking out of the hole. Pretty darn precarious,
but it is a live branch. I'm willing to give it a try with
the rope ladder, to at least see how it feels (the limb,
that is).
It is possible that they've been incubating for some
time, as it is quite likely that I missed seeing this
hole on 27 + 30 April,
4 May I chicken out of Climbing up here with the rope ladder,
we'll have to go with the extension ladder. Also, at
1800 I here peepings (I think) from inside the hole
