1982 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Blom 2 (15 June) As is usual in these cases, we will never know for sure. Alan watched here on 13 June and saw no feedings, so the failure must have occurred suddenly between 11 + 13 June. Also, 13 + 14 June Walter was watching at Corral Viejo Grande, the group with the huge granary at the mouth of CU canyon, and he saw ♂718 there on both days, and apparently a member in good standing! This would strongly suggest that CU grande is the natal group of ♂717 + ♂718, which was certainly suggested by my observations of these birds flying off in that direction while watching roosting at Blom 2 in Feb + March. Also it suggests that at least ♂718 is thinking about returning home, if he has not done so already. 18 June GROUP UPDATE ** ① ♀478 disappeared ~ 20 April 1982 Last seen by Alan 15 April. Power-struggle in progress 25 April. ② ♀578 moved here from Road 1 25 April 1982 seen participating (♀ winning) PS here o... 25 April 19 July Strolling by 1000, No activity here. Blom 2 is probably abandoned. See Alan's notes on Blom 2 and the return of ♀578 to Road 1. 24 July 1 adult + 3 Banded juveniles here at 1800: J Blk-rel/Red Yel CPink/M + J DPink/Mauve ♂NB J Or-red/Wht. These are certainly J767, J768, J769 of Blom 3, with a ♂NB. I flushed all of them, and all took off toward Blom 3. Thus, it's pretty clear that Blom 2 is still abandoned.
