Melanerpes formicivorus
Blom 2
14 April Successful ambush here today, netting 9478 plus
the two 8NB, hereby christened 8717 + 8718.
April Power struggle here, involving 94695+696 from 1800,
but won by 9578 at Road 1! See Alans notes
for the goodies.
11 May Walked by here 1030, flushed 2 birds out of the opened
hole (1980 nest) in the roost tree. I climbed up +
peeped in, but found no eggs.
13 May Watching here 0940. Flushed 2 birds from the roost
tree as I walked up. All 3 birds here (8717, 8718,
9578 all seen well) and it looks like a bit of mate
guarding is going on. See reverse
15 May Alan watching here last two days, reporting mate guarding
and '80 hole visitation. I check the hole 1040, still
no eggs, but it should be soon.
17 May Checked the hole, 1630: Still no eggs. Gave the
birds ~10 acorns, placed in various holes of the
nest tree. Otherwise, they appear completely out of
acorns.
20 May Checked the hole, 1100. Still No eggs! The acorns
that I placed here 3 days ago are all gone, so I
put ~25 more (Call Valley Oak) in various holes.
I would like to have this group nest.
22 May Checked the hole, 0830: Still no eggs, and all the
acorns I gave them seem to have been eaten. I'm
starting to have doubts about Blom 2 nesting. Nonetheless,
I saw 9578, and saw her followed by 28.
So they are still guarding.
