Melanerpes formicivorus
Gazebo
8 June Routine nest watch here, 0740-1040: ♂516, ♂571,
♀653 all took turns at the nest, but I saw no
sign of ♀570. That would be too bad if she is
gone, since I would like to get more data on the
nest contributions by ♀ helpers that are unrelated
to the breeding ♀. ♂571 incubated a lot today,
in keeping with his now presumed breeding status.
10 June Another routine nest watch, also one on 9 June. Pretty
clear now that ♀570 is probably not around
♂516, ♂571, ♀653 the only birds here. Also,
♂516 did a late incubation bout + stayed in, so
♂516 roosted in the nest.
16 June Checked the nest + banded the young nestling here: 4 nestlings,
3 of which looked pretty good, one of which looked very
marginal. No trace of the two other eggs/nestlings, one
of which was a runt. See nest record for details.
18 June ** GROUP UPDATE **
① ♀570 disappeared ~ 10 May 1982 ± 1 month
Last seen here 13 April. Clearly gone by 8 June.
3 July Surprisingly all 4 nestlings still alive + doing OK.
They were banded J819-822. See nest record
for details.
9 July Stroll by here at 0940. I find ♂571, of all things, pounding
away at the feeder (=gazebo). Not sure what he was after.
I also flushed a fledged juvie, but didn't see any bands.
Also, Gazebo is certainly + without question OUT of
acorns.
