Gazebo
11 May Checked nest, 0945. 5 not-too-bad-looking babies.
No sign of 6th egg or nestling. The nestlings looked
a bit thin, perhaps, but there were certainly no runts.
One weighed ~20g, so I guessed them to be 6 days
old or so, meaning my guess of 27 May banding,
was pretty good.
21 May Well Gazebo has blown it again! Leslie watched here
yesterday and saw no feedings in 1hr. Sure enough,
at 1200 I check the hole and find the remains of
3 dead nestlings, moderately decomposed, about 12 days
old at death. So I would guess nest failure occurred
18 May or so. Starvation certainly is the likely cause.
However, Gazebo is not out of acorns: ~100 or so
left. Certainly not many, but no excuse to let the
nestlings starve. Just like last year. Interestingly,
two of the nestlings appeared to have been partially
eaten! The head of one was entirely missing, and
it appeared that viscera of the other was missing.
Hmm! Also, while F was here I heard a lot of
chatters + warbles coming from the fence line. And F
briefly saw 5 birds here! It will be worth waiting
here before too long. 1250, just as F'm leaving I
confirm 9653 bro-wart/corn + 8 [illegible] 516
+June Gazebo's not dead yet! At 1430 I flush a bird out of
the low 1980 hole. F climb up + find 6 eggs including
one runt, Eggs all about 4 days, meaning I should anticipate
hatching on 12 June and banding on 3 July!
