Melanerpes formicivorus
Blom one
4 June I say "hello" to all the holes I know about here,
1400. Doesn't appear to be a second nest around.
8 June Whoa! Over here at 1100, I find a bird looking
out of the low hole in the large douglasii-lobata
hybrid, 50 m WSW of the granary.
9 June At 1700, I climb up to the hole, open it,
and find 4 eggs, ~day 2-3. See nest
record for details. This means I should look-
for hatching on 18 June and banding ~ 8 July.
23 June Checked the nest, 1230: 4 Nestlings, 3 in
pretty good shape, but one runt definitely on
the way out. See nest record.
19 July Walked by here, 1030. Walter had banded 3 nestlings here
10 days ago, but I find nobody looking out of the nest hole.
They could have fledged, I suppose. A few acorns still
remain in the granary. Leaving, I flush a nestling from the
blue oaks along the road at the "summit"
24 July Both 8 492 M/BIR and 8 649 seen here
in passing at 1715, but nobody else.
17 Aug A surprising coup here at 0730. I stroll up over the
knoll and manage to spot all 3 jays in the trees above
the granary: J830 Red-wht/Red-wht, J831 Blue-DBlue/LB
and J832 DGrn/LPnk. Also 8 492 M/BIR at
a 9 (presumably 8649) before they all flew off to
the Live Oak Knoll. Blom 1 is out of stored acorns.
8 Oct Last several times here I've flushed birds out of the 79-80 hole,
but a watch here convinces me that there's no nest. Only 8 492 seen,
