Melanerpes formicivorus
Chongo
(28 May) the snake never emerged. Alan + I walk up at
1800 (1900 daylight), I check the hole + find one
terrorized Acorn Woodpecker nestling. Presumably,
the two others were eaten, but that is of course
unknown. I say, the remaining nestling was terrorized,
because it did not give the usual begging calls when
I opened the hole. Instead, it gave continuous
peepings that a 10-day old nestling gives after
being handled. I will have to check here tomorrow.
The remaining nestling was undamaged, as far as I could tell.
1 June I walk up here at 1830 and am amazed to flush a
bird from the nest hole and hear a baby squawking
inside. The nest is still active! At least for the
moment, as the snake could return at any time.
4 June 1930, flushed an adult from the nest, peeped in, and
found one nestling still doing quite well. He may make
it yet.
8 June Counted stores, 1845: 150 TOTAL
Also, I heard peeping from the nest (I think), so the
nest is still going.
11 June Banded the one nestling here; doing well, new Juv #801
