1982 R.C. Mumme 6 Melanerpes formicivorus Low Hay (23 April) eggs: See the Low Hay nest records for more details. Once again, 9524 laid before I got up here (before 0655) and 9523 laid about an hour later. Today, there were numerous intruders, but I saw no trace of 9587. Also, during part of the time there was nearly constant harrying in the 2° area, and also across the ravine or Warners property. It seems that a male is being rather persistent over there, and they may yet try to branch off a new group. So, 4 eggs here, 1 runt, 3 normal in the nest. Also, it appears from the guarding data that 8461 is fairly well following 9524 (see back of page 5), but he certainly isn't being fanatical about it. Molly had the same impression in her watch yesterday, I should be able to get one more morning's worth of data. 24 April 2 more eggs today (see nest record), Watching 0540. At 0546, a non-chipped-billed ♀ looks out. Boy, (assuming this is 9524) she is certainly laying early 0600 9523 enters briefly, leaves immediately, 9524 goes down. 0607 9524 looks out, then leaves. Check nest 0615, one more egg. See nest record, #5 9523 0710, both 9524 + 9523 enter, 9524 looks out, leaves, Days 2 0715 9523 leaves 0720 Check nest, one more egg. See nest record. 25 April One egg today, probably the work of 9524 Nest Record
