Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack
25 Feb Last of the granary censuses here, 1100-1300. Again I heard
♀587 do some chatter to the adults. Also, the residents
here were hassling a ♂ Kestrel that every so often flew into
the granary. Complete census (♂461, ♀♀523, 524, 587)
Once again, and this should be last watch here for awhile.
27 March Counted stores, 1500:
2° granary 105
1° granary 3870
2975 TOTAL
13 April Alan + Molly have reported activity here in the 1979 nest
hole in the granary. I reopen it at 1100, but find that
the hole has been substantially deepened, requiring a large new
cut (that just barely allows me to reach the bottom).
No eggs.
15 April Molly has reported little or no action in the 79 hole,
so I watch briefly up here, 1400-1530: I see almost
nothing: However, the birds were hanging around the Poison
Oak - Blue Oak Nest Tree, and at one point I saw ♂461
look into that hole, and a ♀ enter for about 10 sec.
I check the hole, + like last year, it is totally devoid of
any wood chips. Hopefully, these birds aren't serious
about nesting yet.
19 April A quick watch here, 1010-1110: Nothing much. Birds flycatcher
like mad, primarily from the Blue Oak nest tree area, and from
♂461 FTF all
the granary. No action in any holes, although ♀587 perched
the ♂ at least
in the 79 hole after Swallows were in the vicinity. As
Molly had mentioned, a ♂NB seemed to be around the 2° area abit
