1982 R.L. Mumme 7 Melanerpes formicivorus Hay Blom 18 June Walter reports legg yesterday by ♀604, and no eggs today. See his notes for details. → **Also, further insights into the death of ♂173 and failure of the first nest, Leslie's nest watch of 30 May would suggest that the nest had failed by that time already. Only a few visits to the nest by ♀604 + ♂173, without ever going in, excepting 1 visit by ♂173, However, ♂S62 also visited the nest once and peeped in, but did not enter, and ♂173 was very much alive at this date! Very interesting. All kinds of possibilities. Infanticide, murder, etc. impossible to tell, but at least we can eliminate all the scenarios of ♂173 dying as the nest failing all at the same time. Also, we must now consider scenarios of ♂S61 + ♂S62 actively contributing to the demise of both. Very interesting. ** GROUP UPDATE ** ① ♂173 found dead, died ~ 5 June ② ♂S61 + ♂S62 moved here ~ 7 June (± 1 week, but not plus. These 2 ♂♂ were here for sure on 9 June (See Leslie's notes). See above discussion for further info. 28 June Leslie reported weirdness here yesterday: No incubation during a nest watch, but lots of flying around by the four residents, wasas, & intruders. I walk up here at 0930 and find things relatively calm. And it looks like incubation is still in progress. I do a 2 hour nest watch
