Melanerpes formicivorus
Hay Blom
(16 June) by 9604 at around 0620. See back of page
5 for details. It is possible that 9711 laid the
one egg + 9604 abstained. The egg laid
today was enormous: 28.8 x 23.9, marked
① by mistake (yesterday's egg marked ②).
However, we watched the hole until 1445,
and 9711 had not re-entered the hole since her
visit at 0500 + 0530. No eggs have been
thrown out. We watched the hole continuously,
yesterday, and even though 9711 entered the hole
twice during Walters' watch, she did not throw out
yesterday's egg.
It's starting to look that 9711 may not lay,
even though the 2 ♂ here are new immigrants. Part of
the problem may be the speed with which all this
has happened. Little more than a week ago 9711's
father (♂173) was here. Now he is gone, new ♂
are here, and the older ♀ in the group is laying
eggs already. That might be asking too much of
a first-year ♀. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
The ♂ 561 + 562 are still following 9604 very
strongly. However, when 9604 is in the nest, the
two ♂ (especially ♂561) often fly back to the granary
for very brief (<30 sec) visits, during which time
they don't appear to eat any acorns. 9711 is often
in the granary during these visits, but sometimes
she is not. Very strange
