1982 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Chongo 7April Molly reported the male sitting in the newly-constructed nest hole on 5 April, so at 0930 F climb up (easy!) to peep in. Not surprisingly, no eggs yet, but it looks like a very nice, deep hole. 12April I peep into the new hole in the granary, 1330: No eggs. 9 May Well Finally, at Molly's recommendation I come up here to check the hole: I flush a bird out, climb up + find 4 eggs, very fresh (I would guess clutch just completed, or 1 more egg to go). Opened hole (see nest record). I would guess 20 May to look for hatching Also, molly has noted the disappearance of 9565 and the appearance of a 9NIB. See her notes for details. 13May Still 4 eggs, 1515. So clutch was certainly completed by 9 May. 22May Peeped in, 1745. 3 Nestlings, and egg 4 unchatched. It probably wait either, since its been at least 13 days since it was laid. Also, as Molly had told me, the 9NIB here has a very strange, all-dark. eye. Absolutely no white in the iris at all, but the right eye seems completely fine. I don't know what her vision is like, but at least she'll be easy to identify. 28May Big news here: Molly watched the nest here this afternoon and saw a snake (probably gopher snake) come down the granary, and go into the nest hole! Molly watched for some time, but
