Melanerpes formicivorus
1500
22 June Tried to watch roosting here, but nobody roosted in the nest,
despite the young age of the nestlings.
30 June Here to bad the nestlings at 1615, I am surprised
to find only one nestling! Two, including
the heaviest, have disappeared without a trace.
Very strange. Could be a case of partial
predation, I suppose, but there's no way to
tell. Anyway he was bated juv. 818
After thought: Could the other 2 nestlings fallen
from the nest, to be carried off eaten by something?
Not impossible at all, considering that this hole points
downward, and considering what happened at Black Oak
last year
7 Aug Watching here 0740. Wow, by 0800, 3 Juv (possibly
just fledged) Coopers Hawks have flown from the N
ridge above the granaries into the Big Creek area.
There must have been a nest on School Hill, as
I think these are not the same Coopers that have
been around Plaque. 0900, ♂297, ♂622, ♀601,
and ♀818 all seen well, but no sign of ♂677 or ♂675.
16 Aug Counted storks, [illegible] 0915:
2° granary 0
1° granary 115
115 TOTAL
♀601, ♂622, plus e Juv. Seen here in passing.
