1981 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Y 3 June Walking past at 1800 I actually see two birds fighting in the dead locust granary by the door to the lower barn. Upon closer examination, the participants turn out to be ♂521 from Plague and I believe ♀523 (!) from Lowthy- School Hill. Anyway, I think 3 birds here from School Hill, as I later see ♂523, ♂402, plus another "friendly" that I never got a good look at. 2 July School Hill + Plague birds here at 0700. or-08blue/whit) ad Plague (♀494) 3 Aug 0800 SHill (J669) ad Plague (♀494) here in the Lower Barn Locusts. A bit of chasing going on as well. 11 Sept Birds here! Not just Plague + SHill, but a lot of NB, and according to Walter, they've been hanging out here at least the last 3 days. Right at the Y at 1500hrs I DBlue-whit(N)/m then 3NB, 10♂, 1♀, and one that appeared to be molting into ♀ plumage. The latter 3 I all saw in the vicinity of the yellow pan trap near the face corner 1520, 5 Plague birds, ♂521, ♀♀494, 496, J♂660 and J♀661 all seen in the Lower Barn locusts. Look very "comfortable there, not being challenged. I wonder what "granary" The intruders here perceive. 1630, The plot thickens. I get a good count of 5 birds in the vicinity of the Y sycamore including J♂669 Or-DBlue/white of School Hill, at least 1 (and I think 2) ♂NB, 1♀NB, and I think that bird molting into ♀ plumage. Everybody looked like they might be juveniles. Lots of tail spots.
