Melanerpes formicivorus
Plague
(8 June) walking by 1110, I see babies! J662 DBlue-Red/DBlue-Red
and J660 DBlue-white both in the Plague tree. J662
not looking any worse for wear from my little faun paws
Both flying quite well. I suspect 661 is around as well.
1120, well, first Juvenile dominance interactions of
DBlue-Red (M)/M
→ the season. Top of the 2° tree, J660
pecks the keepebees out of J662, at least 2 independent
times. Happened after I saw a ♂ fly in and feed 662.
J661 <Blg-DBlue/Blue also seen. 4H1 3 babies,
all 4 adults present!
10 June Watching here 0720. 0800, I see dominance. J661, J662
together on a small storage limb, no adult present, J661
pecks hard at the head of J662 3 separate times!
0900 Watching birds in Big Blue Oak; ♂521 kleptoparasitizes
a ♀ Bluebird. ♀ W. Bluebird had caught this enormous spider,
literally the size of the bluebirds head. Very fat as well.
She handled it for 15-20 seconds, then ♂521 flew down
and the Bluebird flew away without resistance. ♂521 picked up
the rest of the spider and flew up higher in the tree to feed J662
0930. More Juv. Dom in 2° Tree. 661 nails 662
→ very hard around the head several times, 2 separate occasions,
Birds alone in 2° tree. No adults near. 1020, another
J661 > J662. Former luges at J662, who turns head, closes
eyes, while ♂521 present and Freeling J661.
14 June Up in the cabin at 1050 working on the Egg-tossing paper
I am distracted by ♂521 poking around in a globular
Paper wasp nest hanging from the lower crossbar of the utility
