1981 R.L. Munne melanerpes formicivorus Plague (9 may) Broke open egg #5, ad found an almost completely developed embryo. Can't understand off had why it failed to hatch after making it so far. Egg #4 Seems to have suffered the same fate. 27 may Boded babies (3) with walter yesterday 4 June I boob here at 1345. I walk up here to see if the babies have fledged. Lots of adults around, no sign of fledglings, etc. What's more, no babies looking out of the nest or making any noise. With horrible thoughts of last year's failure in mind, I make the mistake of climbing up to the nest, where I find 2 babies still in the nest, 661 + 662. They were't in the nest long, however, and I had to tur around on the ground to get them back, ad slowly ad carefully put them back in the nest hole. They could fly but not with a lot of gusto. J660 must have already fledged. Do not ever do that again, Ron! Could have been a real disaster. 1430, I spot J660 DBLue / fledged, associating with adults in Blue Oak behind (uphill) from the nest 1500 Still nobody has fed the babies in the nest. Hope they'll be OK. I'll check again tomorrow. (I didn't) 8 June walking past at 0630, I see 3 of tho Plague adults jumping all over a Nuttall's woodpecker in the Plague tree. All 3 birds were pounding on the Nuttall's continuously, for about 20 seconds, forcing him to the ground several times. Finally he wound up dazed in front of the chicken coop. I walked over ad he flew off weakly toward the upper burn.
