Melanerpes formicivorus
Plague
(16 April) remained (with 9496 in the area) < 1 min, then flew
way up Madrone canyon again (at least ½ km or so).
About 1840, the 3 birds returned in a tight pack
from madrone canyon, and after stopping in the last trees
briefly, appeared to head off toward "the Y," 9494
remained alone in the granary area. However, right
at about 1900, a ♂ flew into the top of the
Plague tree, was quickly mounted by 9496, then fully
copulated with 9496. It was too dark to see
bands, but the ♂ had a "red point" going
into his white forehead on his left side. Will
have to see who that is. Suspect that it is ♂473,
despite last year's electrophoretic data showing 9496's
nestling was sired by ♂521.
17 April
0615. Nest checked in 2° tree. Still eggs #1 & #2.
0815 ♂521 enters 0820 ♂494 enters; both leave 0822.
Nest checked, Still eggs #1 & #2. 0950 ♂494 approaches
♂521 at hole, ♂494 gives precop tail raise. both leave
without entering. 0952. ♂473 enters. 0955 ♂496 enters
♂473 leaves (?). 0956 enters, 9494. 1000, ♂496 leaves
with wood chip, ♂494 follows. 1001 ♂521 enters.
#3
Nest checked, new egg, 24.5 x 19.1. Probably ♂494,
but not certain since both ♂♀ were in. Since ♂496
flew out with a wood chip, End 1020.
Later in the afternoon, Walter finds nest empty!
Entirely cleaned out, ready for remest. Suspect ♂496
These guys just did not have their act together this time.
