1981 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Plaque 14 April Watching here 0710. Whoa, another long trip up over Adobe Hill by I think 8473 following 9494, what's about 0745 more, I walk over to the Buckeye canyon hole free and flush a bird out. Don't know who it was, but it looked like it flew back to Plaque by itself. These guys need more watching. 1320, I walk back to the Buckeye canyon hole, and I am greeted by the sight of a 8 woodpecker looking out. Oh, woe is me! 1430, Not good at all. I peep in, find a single fresh egg. Almost certainly laid this morning. Measured (26.3 x 19.1 mm), marked #1, and returned. Set up blind, and start watch. End 1500, M. Peacocks. Start watching near cabin 1750. 1803, 3 birds in 20 tree, 9496 flies in from cabin BO, pre-cops, 8473 flies over. She mounts, he then makes weak attempt to mount her, but doesn't. 1808 All 4 birds fly down toward Y area. Very interesting both 8473 + 8521 are following 9494. 9496 is following them! I get the distinct impression that 9496 is simply not ready to lay eggs yet, and that 9494 is the only "receptive" 8. 1810, all 4 have flown to the Y, don't return. 8521 + 9496 may have drifted back here early, but I saw very little at roosting. One bird may have been scared out of roosting in the nest hole by Byron (see his notes)
