1981 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Fanny Arnold (27 May) Start watch here 0840. Walter found one egg in the nest yesterday, watching for behavior. 0845, the first thing I see is 9614 Bkrt-Dorn (N)/Metal from Finch (!) intruding here, mildly supported by 9652 Yellow/Metal! 0950, Very difficult watching here. Unable to get any real data, but I have the definite impression that 9651 is not following 9652. Both birds seen well, but only once together 22 June Here in passing, I see 9651 feed at the nest, so nest still in progress. 30 Aug I stroll past here at 0930, sit down, and by 0935 I have a complete census! 9651 Dorn/M 9652 Yellow/M, and both juvies 705 DBinc/Red wnt + 706 M/Green-Dorn all seen well in the granary-nest tree-roost tree area. Even a bit of intruder action by a 9NB. chased most vigorously by J705. 14 Oct Start 1430: After seeing 9652 fighting with the new 9 at UA2, I stroll up here. I find both juvies, Dorn J705, Red/Ear-Dorn and J706 M/"". But also here, looking like she belongs (in the roost tree, waits with the juveniles) is 9567 Red/Red m/Red of A1. 1450, no sign of 9651 yet. What's going on? Why is 9652 acting like she's abandoning? Storage hasn't started yet, near as I can tell. J706 looks like it might molt 9, but both juv still look young (dark eyes, small bills) 1530, Only the juvies around now. No sign of 9651. Also unclear what 9567's intentions are. I saw her with A1 birds earlier and she seen to be not around at the moment.
