Melanerpes formicivorus
LA2
(22 may) the fact that I watched here 14 + 17 May ad never saw
a bird in or at the hole, they must have had pretty low
nest attentiveness. Anyway, it's a safe bet (or fairly safe)
that the clutch size was 4 and hatching occurred today
Also looks like only 6611 + 9637 are present here, so a
pair instead of an unrelated trio, Too bad.
26 may Checked the nest, 1810. 3 very cold basics, no egg. (I was
trying to watch the group from a distance, but the birds refused
to go to the hole. The 4th egg I saw was gone. I
Suspect that it hatched, + the young died. It seems a bit
early to be tossing out eggs, but you never know. Still
being conservative suggests that we can't say how many eggs
hatched,
17 July Watching at LA2, I see juv 698 metal / blue near the
LA2 granary at 0845, before it flies off toward LA2
1100, at LA2 I find J698 eating an acorn. Still a few acorns
here
18 July Again i passing 1210, J698 m / blue in the granary. 2 other
birds as well, but they both flushed quite early as I walked
up,
13 Sept A good census here, starting 0900. 6611 DBlue/Blk/Gran-war
Q637 LPink/Blk and J697 (not seen previously)
M / Blue- Green
Blk-Yellow / Blk
looking like he may be in 8 plumage. Birds appear to
be gathering green acorns from the far, far side of South Ravine
0940, starting to worry a bit about J698. End 1000. These
guys out of acorns.
14 oct Storing has begun! ~100 new acorns (Blue Oak?) in the granary.
