Melanerpes formicivorus

7 April A quick pass here 1500, ♀847 NB the only ae in
the granary. That is all. Nobody in either hole.
27 April Start watching here 1515. ♂638 metal/DPink
and ♀640
Doreen/Doreen
Dorn/metal (didn't see arrowness) in the granary momentarily,
That ♀ flew off, but ♂638 did not follow. She (plus
another bird?) flew off toward the northwest. Later ♂638
looked off SE. 1530, ♀847 NB comes by quickly, also
flies NW. These guys still have a well-stocked
granary.
14 May I say hello to the granary holes at 1230, but nobody
looks out. I also wander all around the Bianca-Black Oak
ridge near the granary, but find no reasonable looking holes.
17 May A walk by at 1130. Nobody in the holes in the granary
21 May An incredible struggle, but I finally find the nest here
today, tipped off by the birds flying to it.
It's a N-facing hole in the main trunk of a Black
Oak just N of the "flat", at 45 meters west of
the Ball fence line. Easy climb
22 May Open up the hole here 1400. 3 well-feathered,
eyes-open nestlings (maybe 20-22 days?). Will
have to band these guys soon!
24 May 3 young boded
26 May Watching nest ♂84 1640 End 1810. All 4 birds, ♂635
CBlue/DPink (at nest only once), ♂639 Yellow/DBlue, ♀640
DGrn-Red(iv)/M, ad ♀NB here. ♂639 is definitely the stud
♂. He fed many times and removed all the fecal sacs. Could
detect no difference in behavior of ♀♀, but I suspect ♀640 is the brood
queen is super.
