1981 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak Hastings Reservation 6 Feb Start watch 1010. ♂102 white/yellow, plus another ♂426 B/k/or (?) in the tree tops between Black Oak + Arnold 1. 1200, over at Bianca Knoll, in the Valley Oak closest Orange /DBlue-Yellow (X) ♂497 Metal/B/k-Red, and perhaps ♀544, but not sure. 1340. Confusion. I'm now on the E. end of the knoll, looking NE across the ravine toward a large VO. Two NB♂ there, and I even saw a dominance interaction (Over a Black Oak) acorn) Earlier I saw a ♀NB on the Knoll that flew across S Ravine to South Fence Bianca looks pretty much like a B/k/or./w. Free for all: 1348, Presto, at the same spot, ♂426 and ♂321, Orange plus a ♀ turn up. Geez, this is tough to figure out. 1420 More interesting stuff. I close in on this large VO on the Bianca - Black Oak Ridge, when some (?) hawks flies in. A Flicker breaks, but I see 2 wickers freeze. Then one wicker flies out, and 3 more break simultaneously. I pick up ♂426 B/k/or, ♀427 Red/M, and ♂321. Then a female 5th woodpecker drifts out, lads in the same tree as ♂426, who proceeds to chase the latecomer. Perhaps an unbanded ♂ that I saw here earlier? 1445, Back watching the knoll, ♂321 and a ♀NB, no agression. Then a NB♂ chasing 288, both m/ Perhaps one is ♂611, LA2? 1500 saw a male, Metal / (Red, orange) - Black ? Perhaps ♂566, All? It was chased mildly by ♂nobods At least 2 NB♂ here, they may be friendly.
