1981 R.L. Munne Melanerpes formicivorus ARF 20 May Wandered around here 1430-1530. No birds looking out of the 1980 hole. In fact, no trace that any birds were even around, actually. I did find 2 fairly new looking W-facing holes in a high dead stub in a Valley Oak just 20 meters SW of the ARF granary. Also a Coopers hawk nest (incubating ♀ + 3 eggs) 30 meters NW of the granary. 22 Oct Here at 0745, ARF is occupied! Already several hundred acorns stored here. Will have to watch to see if anyone here is banded. 22 Nov Trying to do just that, 1215. I can see about 300 acorns or so just from where I'm sitting. 1345. A poor day to watch. A few karrits, but nobody has come to the granary. A few weeks ago, I remember seeing 3 birds in the granary here at one time. So there should be at least 3 birds in the group. I'll have to try again. 2 Dec Making another try here, 0845. 0950, well, it looks like 3 unbanded birds (Drat!), 2♀ (I'm pretty sure) and 1♂. I had a brief impression there might be a 4th bird around, but there was a lot of intruder activity here, so I couldn't be sure. Anyway, I'll definitely have to look into the possibility of an ambush here. end. 0955
