1981 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill West 24 April Walk up here 1700. 531 Brn-or/Brn-or in the granary, other bird waking nearby. Nobody in holes 7 May Up here 1030. Nobody in last years nest hold when I arrive, but after lying down + resting for 20 minutes, I roll over, say hello, and a 9 looks out. These guys do have a nest. 28 May Up here at 1400, I nervously climb up to the nest hole using the rope ladder, open up the hole and find just one nestling, about 19-20 days old. 'Probably won't have to be banded about 3 June or so, 6 June Start watch 0740, watching nest, wanting to see who's in the group. 0900 well 531 " / m and 530 " / BPak-or are both still here. Both seen in the granary (acorns still present). However, there is a possibility that the nest has failed, Never saw anybody at the nest feeding the nestling. Nor did either adult carry any food around in its bill. Hmm. Should check up here pretty soon (2 days), to see if a baby is looking out. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that this group has been reduced to the basic pair. 8 Nov About time I watched here, 0845. A bird flew into the granary while I was setting up the hide, so there is activity anyway. 1130, Not a rip-roaring success. BPak-or/m 530 " / BPak-or seen very well, and a 9, but I never did see her bands. Will have to try again. My definite impression is that only 2 birds are present. A good census, 530, 531 definitely here, Nobody else Seeing to be present. 0845 - 1015. 21 Nov
