Melanerpes formicivorus
School Hill
3 July Watching here 0545. No luck. Both Javs, 9260, 8402, 836
all seen, but no dominance. End 0730.
9 July Trying again from bottom of the hill, 0645. 0715. Damn it,
more iffy dominance. 8402 feeding both J668 & J669 in
the granary. My view was lousy, but I think I saw J669
pecking J668. Shit! I wish I could see one clearly.
0800. Boring, leaving. No, right as I leave, I
finally see it! J668 Blk-green/Black is pecked
most certainly by another J, which has to be 669.
Finally! That goes against my initial impression, but
now I'm confident that J669 > J668
29 Aug Start 0815. 0915. Birds flying around a lot on the upper end
of the [illegible] field, but little action in the granary area.
886 cp.k/m, 9260 " /m, 8402 Yellow/DPnk all seen
quite well and I'm pretty sure that I got a look at J668
Blk-torn/m Blk-torn/Blk as well, in either 8 or still juv. plumage. At
least 4 birds seen together at once in a VO toward the top of
the field.
0955 Everybody shows up in a VO in the eastern edge of the
field, eating green acorns. J668 confirmed, plus J669 m /or-ogue
Complete census, Irickon End 1000. These guys definitely do not
have a fall nest, and I see no 9 following or anything to suggest that
they soon will. Also, J669 looks like he is definitely in 8 plumage,
but I'll have to check later to be sure.
