1981 R.C. Murrie Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill 24 June 9523 seen intruding at Gate r-Westgate. 28 June Start 0555 from Mr. Malaise 0730 well, I may have actually seen something. J668 was in the haut peck tree when he flew down to the Valley Oaks bolon the malaise trap. I think I saw J668 chase, peck, grapple, ad otherwise jump all over another bird. Would only make sense if it was J669. 0800, unfortunately I just saw 2 birds on the flycatching perch, one really pchrygand at the other. I think both were juvs (one certainly was). The dom bird from flew to the granary. Then I believe the sub flew to pretty much the same spot. From there, I saw what I thought was the sub fly to an acorn limb, and putting my scope on, I find J668 as a adult 8, 8402 I believe. Oh well. All this was too confusing to be sure of, but it did not support the hypothesis that J668 > J669. 0820, Both J668 + J669 together on an acorn limb, J668 being fed by 8402. J669 did not try to horn in on the feeding + kept a respectful distance, suggesting again J668 > J669. I'll have to check the bonding notes on these guys & 0845 2 July At 0700, I find lots of S Hill birds at the Y: 8402, 9523, 9604 and both juvs, J668 + J669. J668 I even find eating green developing Valley Oak acornlets (!) from the VO of the east side of the road near the Y culvert. Both Plague juvs also here, being chased around a bit by the S Hill birds. J660 even in the same VO, chased out after a while by J668.
