Melanerpes Formicivorus
School Hill
Hastings Reservation
22 Jan A successful ambush in the 1980 (2nd) nest hole, catching
♀604 and ♂86, whose blood we were after. I had to
open up the nest hole and pull them out, as both birds
were lying extremely low, hunkered down at the bottom
of the nest. I thought nobody was home for the longest
time. The previous night, one other bird seemed to
roost in the old Valley Oak hole, but I saw no sign
of anyone else.
25 Jan Start watch 1135. ♀524 metal / shows up,
starts sapsucking from Scruggly blue oak at the edge
of the field, due east of the exclosure and 30-40 meters uphill
from the Valley Oak nest-roost hole, ♀602
also sapsucks. 1220 ♀604 flies to the granary tree, and
♂86 jumps all over her, pecking her hard around the head+neck,
for about 5 sec, until she moved off the storage limb. Is
he trying to exclude her from the granary? 1340 end-watch
No sign of ♂402 + ♀260. Especially worrisome about ♀260,
since I saw her only poorly last time I watched, and today I
confused BLK-wht/metal at ♀602 for ♀260's whtrm.
Black is thought to see in poor light. Could she be gone?
whow, 1355, on the way down the hill I find ♀260 ... / m,
Not a great look, but good enough to exclude other possibilities.
So where is ♂402?
6 March Start 0945. 1030, ♀260 wht/m shows to chase PNB
intruder. ♀604 Red-wht/Black, ♀602 BLK-wht/m also turn
Yellow/OPink
up. 1200. Complete census eve ♂402, ♂86 mauve/mauve
OPink/m, ♀523 DBlue-wht/DBlue
