Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 1
16 June Start 0530. What do you know dominate, finally! 0545,
♀383 Feeding J673 Dorn-Corn/M in the granary, J671 Metal/Black-Blue
flies in, gives J673 a sharp peck to the head. 0820, Sheer
boredom after that. J672 seen briefly later, but that's all.
J670 has not seen since banding. Will have to check the
nest before too long to see if he made it out.
21 June Watching above granary 0515. 0540, A bit of luck, I
think. Pretty sure I saw J672 peck at 673, while
673 was being fed by adults in the granary.
24 June Once more 0700, 0845 Finally, up by Vallialla I see
CBlue / DBlu-ellon (N?)
J672
peck at J673
twice! good! ♂577 was nearby, but not feeding, when
J672 Flen to where J673 was, gentle pecks, but J673
Showed submissive head turn, crouch, + chatter.
J670 must certainly be gone. I would have seen him by
now, otherwise. I'm also starting to worry a bit about
J671, not seen in quite some time (well, sweet).
1000, Hanging around a bit more, definitely only J672 + J673
seem to be around. Maybe I do have a complete dominance table yet.
30 June Checked the nest hole at 1600 to see if all the babies made it
out. Apparently so. No trace of any jurls in the nest hole.
1 July Trying here 0710. Looks indeed like J672 + J673 are
the only ones left. 3 more mild dominance interactions, J672 mildly
but definitely pecking at J673, twice in the VO, are in
the sycamore, 0820, whoops, J672 >7 J673 again, this
time about 6 hard pecks to the head, in the granary,
with ♂580 nearby, about to feed J672 End 0900
