1981 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Road I (5 May) Eggs # 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 were still present, meaning eggs #2,4,6 had hatched! I marked the 3 babies with magic marker all on the right wing + leg. One of the babies was quite large, suspect it hatched yesterday. 16 May Roosting, and pretty certain I saw same metal band as the bird entered, meaning 8486 roosted in the nest 6 June Start watching above granary 1016, looking for ① Juvenile dominance ② Sign of renesting. As for ③, Looks unlikely. 9269 Flycatching, working stores in the granary, quite a bit, nobody nearby. D6m-6cm /metal/ Babies seem to be up toward Valhalla, J673 seen already. 1140. Well, the juvs are keeping nut too low a profile to accomplish much today. 9269, 9383, and all 4 1st yr birds seen will. J671 M/Bik-2Blue seen up above Valhalla, End. 9 June Watching here 0730-0830. Babies still keeping a very low profile. None seen today, though I suspected some were up by Valhalla. Will have to try again. 8486+269 seen, meaning adults are all here. 12 June Start watch 1400, windy afternoon, probably little chance of finding babies. 1530, as I said, not a good day. I did find J672 DBlue/Yellow (N) plus 9269, 9383, 8486, 8577, 8578, 8580. 15 June Trying again above granary, 1215. 1415, Zero again. As I leave I flush J673 + J672 out of the sap tree live oak behind the granary, but no trace of the other babies. Where are they. Maybe I'll try early tomorrow
