1981 R.L. Mumme
Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 1 Hastings Reservation
8 Jan Start 1528. Granary census on reverse. 1550, evidence that
♂580 still dominates, ♂577, as the latter appeared to chatter
and give way (while working acorn) when ♂580 approached.
1645, ♂486 is conspicuously absent. ♂294, ♀269, ♀383,
♂577, ♂579, ♂580, ♀578 all seen well and repeatedly.
End 1700, save for watching roosting. Roosting, nobody
uses any of the dubious looking holes in the 1° granary,
2° granary (sycamore), or the Valley Oak up the hill from the
1° granary. I do find a bird looking out of the old Starling
hole in the sycamore next to the former 1980 nest tree.
The hole is in a live branch facing the road.
12 Jan After much worry, I finally see ♂486 M / DBlue-Orange.
Everyone else seen here, except ♂294. Whoops, ♂294
also shows up. Complete census here.
14 Feb Start Valentines Day watch 1420. Granary census on back.
Like Rd3, these guys may still be storing acorns. ♀269,
♂577, ♂579 all flew into the sycamore with Live Oak acorns
1510, ♂294 does as well. Pretty slow, actually.
♂294, ♀269, ♀383, ♂577, ♂579 all seen very well, but
nobody else. End 1555
9 March A quickie watch here, 1130-1230. Good census, ♂486 M / DBlue-Orange
♀269, ♀383, ♂577, ♀578, ♂579, ♂580 all seen
well. Only ♂294 missing, but he's probably here.
Beautiful day, lots of Flycatching.
22 March Walter and I attach the Rd1 nest hole backup
in the big sycamore adjacent to the 1980 nest
tree.
