Melanerpes formicivorus
Westgate Hastings Reservation
12 Jan A quick watch here at 1315, both adults present.
♂58 No leg, ♀599 Metal / Blue-Red. ♂58 flycatching
from top of sycamore
17 Feb Yesterday I noted that the main granary branch (long, low,
overhanging the road) had fallen. Bad news for these guys.
The limb was still pretty much intact & loaded with acorns,
so I prop it up against a partially fallen branch of a Valley
Oak, 20 meters east of the granary sycamore. Perhaps they
will still be able to use it.
11 Feb Here at 1030, no sign that these birds have used
the displaced granary limb. No sign that anyone else has
used it either, though.
17 Feb Granary returned to tree. corn/corn Red
8 March Quick watch at 1130. ♂58 no leg, ♀599 metal/Blue-Red
both here
4 May Yet another quick watch here 1745. ♂58
corn/corn
and ♀599 Metal / Blue-Red in the granary. A couple of
sortees to a tree upon Haystack Hill. ♂58 doesn't seem to
be tightly following ♀599, but you never know
9 May at 1030, a bird looking out of the low hole (broken
stab overhanging road), a believe a ♀. Will have to
look in there soon.
23 June Trying to watch for babies here 1330. I hear & see some
birds (sapping?) in a live oak just up the road from the granary
♀ Red-Tan
28 June Again 1715. 1820, ♂282 Tan-Acu/Tan-Red intruding here,
not chased by anybody. ♂58, ♀599, ♀692 all see well, ad almost
certain that another Juve here as well.
