1981 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Gate 24 June Watching here 1030, 1100, who should intrude (and be chased out quite violently) but 9523 of S Hill-Low Hay. She then flew to the top of the W gate granary, then continued NW. 25 June Looking for Juv. Dominant early here, no luck 30 June 0900, Success finally, after watching here since 0630. J686 alone on the "low" storage hole limb, J685 LBlue-Red/LBlue flies in. They both lock bills, stabbing, lunging, and it looks like a tossup for a few seconds. Then J686 turns head, ad J685 pounds away at the head of J686 5-6 times. Good! No adults near. J685 seems to have problems with his left (?) eye, as it looks like he's keeping it closed most of the time. Maybe a peck from an adult or J684, Of the latter, I got some iffy evidence that J684 >> J685. On Valley Oak alone or swimming hole, J685 alone: J684 flies in, lands below, hitches up past J685, and I'm almost certain J685 chattered. It would be nice to confirm that. 1 July Watching 0920; 1040, Up till now, virtually non-stop action in multiple the low storage/roost hole branch. All 3 babies with much dominance. J684 x J685 >> J686 each 3 times, all hard + definite, all with adult present. The other 3 were J685 >> J684, although none were perfectly clear-cut. One, J685 definitely lunged (but missed) J684 as the latter hitched past. One was a standard peck with adult feeding, but I didn't see it perfectly. The last, J685 in the broken top of the limb, J684 started in, and came right back out, looking like he had
