Melanerpes formicivorus
Gate
(23 April) 9587, formerly of Lower Haystack, BPAK-8IK/M, is also in the gate area. Visits the acorn-laden live oak, but sits for a long time in the spindly Valley Oak 30 m S of the gate. Not seen at Low Hay since late in the revolution there. Now obviously floating. 1510, 2 times 9587 picks acorns off the ground from under the Live Oak.
Back here 1545, 9587 still here, plus 9616 yellow-dart/yellow-dart of Finch. Saw both go to the ground underneath the live oak, then carry away acorns.
25 April At 1145, 2 birds were looking out at 2 different (but adjacent) holes in the very "holey" limb in the gate sycamore. A third bird was standing on the limb as well. Hope they do nest there. Both holes faced the swimming hole, more or less. Will have to keep tabs on it.
→ Watching 1230. About the 1st thing I see is 9514 fly into the granary carrying a lizard, presumably a Sceloporus. 83 still following the 9 closely. Like 23 April, a couple of flights up on Haystack Hill. 9601 not seen for certain, but a 4th "resident-looking" bird was seen near the granary at the gate. Also, 9587 is still camped out at the gate. Saw her in the same spindly Valley Oak as 23 April.
27 April Coming by at 1100, Lots of activity in the hole we originally thought they would use. Birds looking out, etc. I test-style it up to the hole at 1145, but nest still empty. I remedy that by introducing a plaster egg.
→ 28 April Walter says egg tossed out by early this AM.
30 April Swing past at 1430, and two birds in the hole, one just
