1981 R.L. Munne Melanerpes formicivorus Gazebo 20 May Wandering around here, 0815 - 0945. Picked up 3 birds in the S Gazebo area, but they proved to be 2♀ NB and a ♂. Suppose they were just wandering from a territory along the road, somewhere. Anyway 1000, just as I'm leaving the (same?) 3 NB birds fly into the main granary area. Mildly chased around by one of the residents, (the ♂516, I suspect, since ♂653 was in the nest). Again, no evidence that we have anything more than a pair here. 22 May Routine nest watch. I don't think that the eggs have hatched yet. 26 May Eggs have hatched by 0930. I hear peepings from the nest when an adult looks out at me. Will check here in a few days. 24 May Nest check 0930. 4 babies! all eggs hatched DPtr DBLue 20.6g Lorn Or 18.5g Red - Tan 12.0g NB 9.4g 3 June Disturbing nest watch, 1415-1615. No visits. ♂516 came to the nest tree without food, garricked a few times (!) but nobody else. Was here, so I guess the ♀ is still around. Has the nest failed? 1630, well, no. I climb up and perilously reach out and put my hand over the hole and hear (weak) peepings. Also, these guys are nearly out of acorns. May be about to fail? 5 June Looks like they have failed. Watch the nest 0800 - 0900
