Melanerpes formicivorus
Gazebo Hastings Reservation
10 Jan Start 1045. ♂516 DBlue-Yellow / DBlue ♂517 LPink/M seen right away, then-♂571 metal/LBlue viciously chasing a nuthatch out of the granary, Pretty slow, otherwise.
2 March 10-1200 good watch here ♂516 DBlue-Yellow / DBlue ♂517 LPink/M metal/LBlue ♂509 LBlue-Blk/LBlue ♂570 Mauve/LBlue metal, ♂571 M/LBlue Blk all seen well. I think that this might well be a complete census. At 1145, all 5 birds together in big dead V0 50 m west of granary area. No sign of anybody else. Almost certainly no new ♀ yet. End 1200
17 March A quick swing past here at 1000, I flush a couple of birds. No evidence of revolution (power struggle) for the ♀ vacancy yet.
28 March Another pass by here, 1545. All's quiet.
April After seeing ♀509 in the incipient revolution at Low Hay, LBlue-Blk/LBlue I decide to swingby here at 1630. ♂571 metal here, Plus 2 others that (as usual) I don't get a look at. No revolution activity anyway. OOPS, just as I'm about to leave I see ♀570 mauve/M, ♂516 DBlue-Yellow/DBlue metal/Yellow LBlue, and ♀509 back here the same day! How about that. Perhaps she'll take ♀570 with her up to Low Hay tomorrow. End @ 1720.
8 April Another pass here, 1100-1114. All quiet.
15 April Here at 1215. No activity
20 April Stop here at 1500. No revolution activity, ♂571 and two ♀♀ (one probably ♀570 mauve/metal, the other ♀509) all I see.
