Melanerpes formicivorus
Blomone - Blom 2
(20 Aug) many of the j uvs will remain here or at Blom one, or
return to 1500 (new ♀ 601 ad-all) is still a mystery.
♂622 is also a real mystery. He is definitely not part
of the Blom 2 scene (at least at the moment), but I also
didn't perceive him to belong at Blom 1, either (I've only
seen him [illegible] at the knoll). End 1200, Oh, over on
the knoll I also saw some dominance interactions among the j uvs,
that I think are in accordance with Mary's Observations :
676 pocketed 675 once, and 675 pocketed 678 once. Whoa, 1205,
in the Blom 2 Blue Oak, ♀478 gave a great precopulatory tail raise
and crouch, and ♂492 made a feeble mount. Hmm. Wonder if
a fall nest is on their minds. 1215, One more addition,
J677 + J678 are sapsucking from the Valley Oak (!) next to
the pond dam.
12 Sept I stroll by the holes at Blom 1, find no evidence of a nest, or
any birds, period. But I do see a couple of birds at Blom 2.
Watching Blom 2 0900. Some activity up toward the big knoll as well.
0945, well, ♂493 LBlue/CBlue, ♀478 M/DBlue-or, absolutely
here, and showing a great deal of interest in the 1980 nest hole (!)
♂493 in particular is making a lot of short trips to the hole, but
I saw him enter a couple of times. I don't think they
should have a nest, but it's worth keeping an eye on it. ♀478
is doing a lot of garricking, and no evidence of ♂493 following
the ♀. I now must acknowledge that Blom 2 is a legitimate group,
and hereforth will take notes on it separately. Nobody but ♂493
and ♀478 today. Oh, but I heard what sounded like three
birds calling from Blom 1 earlier
