1981 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Blom one (26 may) 1500, dead, or what? Also saw 3/800 birds intruding here at 1010. (♂561, ♂562, ♀565) 28 may ♂622 seen at 1500, feeding young in the nest there (!). I Presume that the aggression from ♂492 forced him to go home 29 may Start 0615, I pick up all 5 birds (seen well) at Blom 2. ♂622 is here, but getting chased around the Blom 2 area a bit by ♂♂492 (especially) and 493. Short chases + supplants only, nothing. I also believe that I saw either ♂492 or ♂493 chattering to the other 0720, fog blowing in, quitting. Only ♂♂492 + 493, ♀649 seen in the grass! Well, over at the mouth of the second canyon I pick up ♂584 (mctul / BP.K). He's still alive anyway. A 2nd bird, with whom he looks friendly, also there 31 may Start once again 0610. Lots of tarrits coming from Blom 2 0730, well, at least 4 birds here still, but as usual I see only ♂♂492, 493, ♀649. Is the 4th bird ♀649 or ♂623 (suspect former). No interest in holes. What's more, I saw ♂492 + ♂493 Fly away from ♀649. Are they ever going to nest 1 June Start 0630. More of the same, No interest in any holes, Doesn't look like ♂♂ are following ♀♀. Lots of flycatching activity in the flat between Blom one + Hay Blom. I did see ♀648 (mctul-Blk/wh) in the grassy when I first arrived. ♀649 ♂492 also here. Over on the flat, I did see a bit of chasing going on, so these guys may not yet have it together End 0730,
