Melanerpes formicivorus
Blom one
26 May
Start 0620. 0630, 9649 is top of granary with a Malacosoma
Caterpillar; She wipes it back + forth on a limb maybe 100
Times before flying off (to eat it?)
0725, 9649 enters (for about 15 sec) the hole in
the Valley Oak 15 meters SW of the granary. I saw her
look-in briefly at about 0700.
0730, Sounds like many birds over by Blom 2.
0750, Back watching after climbing up to the 2° tree
hole. Easy climb, with a couple of webbing ladders.
I doubt that she did anything.
→ 0758 Moredominare, 9492 pecks hard at 9622 who
then retreats into a "niche" in the large limb 2 feet
to the south of the hole in which the birds laid eggs
Earlier 9622 really does act like a "baby". Lots of
begging-like actions
0900, Peeped into 2° tree hole. Not a good hole.
Lots of lichen + grass in the bottom, dragged in by starling,
Bluesird, Myiarchus, or something of that ilk. I doubt that
they'll nest there. 0915, over at Blom 2, I see 9649
Green-Blk/Metal over here by herself. I just realized that I
hadn't seen either her or [illegible] 9493 in the Blomone
granary. What's more, I didn't see 9648 in the granary
on 24 May, either. When I flush 9648 from the
Blom 2 nest tree, she flies toward Corral Viejo canyon,
not toward Blom-one. Looks bad.
1040, after watching here a bit longer, still no sign
of 9649 (in the granary) or 9493 at all. Is he here, [illegible]
