1981 R.C. Mumme
Melanerpes formicivorus
Blom-one
13 May Checked all the holes that I know about, finding nothing.
Pretty windy, not a good time to watch birds. The
1979 + 1980 nest hole (in granary) appears to be occupied
by starlings.
14 May Watching here 0815. 9648 Grn-BIK/wnt and a
♂ metal/? in the top of the granary. She flies
off toward the ⚫ knoll, the male follows.
0915, 9649 wnt/DBlue here as well. So at least
299 still here. Again, foggy, windy, very
difficult to see birds. Will try some other time.
17 May Trying to watch here again 1700. Jees; those guys are
tough to watch. I get a glimpse of ♂622,
another ♂ & ♀, but that's it. Walter says nobody looked
at the hole with 2 eggs in the granary
1845, Now we're getting somewhere. I pick up 5 birds
over at Blom 2. Points: ① Looks like we're down to a 2-♀
group. 9650 does not seem to be here ② ♂492 is not
for 9649 following-wise ③ ♂493 + ♂622 are strongly following
9648. See the bit of behavior on back
18 May Start 0550. Somebody is being chased continuously around
the granary. Carrick's heard as well. Is this 9650, or
(more likely 9478?) (605 lets hear it for predictive
biology, the intruder is 9478, being
chased around like mad by 2 birds (presumably 99649+9649)
[illegible], 0730 Things have calmed down. A ♂ entered
the hole facing the pond for a couple of seconds, but
that was all. Rainy, misty. Bagging it.
