Melanerpes formicivorus

Hastings Reservation
10 Jan Pass by here 0935. ♂513 or - BPNK /or here. Later, ♂584
BPNK/mauve as well. I've seen 3 birds here I'm fairly certain,
3 March Walk by here at 0920. ♂584 metal/BPNK
and
♀478 m /DRINE orange in the granary. A third bird also
seen, presumably ♀513. In addition, I saw ♂584
urking and mildly chasing a banded ♂ intruder, but
I know not who. Back at 1230, a Beaudou
→ Prairie Falcon zips by, ♀ in the granary gives
alarmcalls. Not positive who, but suspect ♂513
Again, not sure.
23 April Start 0730. Revolution, as reported by Walter yesterday,
in full swing. ♂478 is gone, and lots of ♂
0733. 1500 contingent, ♂♂492, 493, 622 all here.
Staked out the periphery (Blue Oaks above the granary) watching
with a ♀NB.
End 0815, when I managed to run up and catch
two birds locked in a death grip in the tall grass underneath
the granary. One was ♀478, and I let her go. The other
was a ♀NB, which I took back to the labs to be
banded ♀647 BIK/BIK, the "Black ♀". Anyway, I guessed
about 12-10 birds here at least. 3 1500 ♂♂ 2 ♀NB,
and a couple of ♂NB, the two residents, plus others
will have to come back for a better look later.
Right now, ♀478 and ♂584 seen in control of the
granary. Incidentally, the ♀NB that I caught was
bleeding from some wounds in her mouth lining, presumably
as a result of her tussle with ♀478.
