1981 R.L. Mumme 30 Melanerpes fornicivorus Low Hay **(6oct)** been a victim of predation at the nest, snuffing out him as well as the 3 nestlings. ♂307 was still roosting in the nest (see Byron's notes) on 25 + 27 May. Unfortunately, I didn't watch up here until 3 Aug, when ♂307 was certainly gone. Given that he was suffering from a bad leg, the predation hypothesis is just too tenuous given our poor data on the timing of ♂307's disappearance. See my previous notes. But to play it safe, I'll say ♂307 disappeared on about 10 July ± 2 weeks, bearing in mind that he could have been snuffed out with the nest between 18 - 21 June. ♀523 + ♀604 moved here (returned?) 17 July ± 2 weeks Both were at Y with Shill birds on 2 July, certainly at Low Hay on 3 Aug. Both then moved to Hay Blom on 12 Aug ± 1 week. Both were "last" seen at Low Hay on 3 Aug, but both were at Hay Blom on 19 + 22 Aug. ♀523 however, returned to Low Hay on 6 Sept ± 2 weeks (seen back at Low Hay 20 Sept) ** 1 Nov A watch here, 1000 - 1200. A nervous start, as I first see a ♀NB flycatching from the broken Valley Oak. He disappears soon, but I find in the granary ♂461 ♀523, ♀524, all see quite well, plus ♀587 wht - B1k/Bpat-B1k, backt from Oblivion!! Even saw her store an acorn. As far as I can tell, these birds are all pretty tight. Saw ♂461, ♀9523, 524, storing a lot of acorns. As I recall, I thought I might have seen ♀587 here last time I watched (5 Oct?), but will have to check previous notes.
