Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack
(25 June)
they had starved to death, their remains would have to
still be in the hole. I don't think the adults could have heaved
them out in their advanced state. Could the other 2 have fledged?
Possible, but very unlikely. Certainly they would have had to
fledge on 24 June, making them mere, well, not
so mere 28 days old. However, J700 has to have been
death for at least 4-5 days, and I suspect that
he died shortly after banding on 18 June. I guess I should
come up here to make sure that no fledglings are around.

Start 0920. Surprise surprise! First bird I see is
9604 Red-wrt/Blt. In the 2° granary, then the
granary, looking like she belongs here. ♂461 also seen with
her in their granary, not chasing her (!). Another ♀ also
here, which I presume is 9524, but haven't seen her
yet for sure. 1040, The plot thickens! 9523 DB/wrt/DB
is BACK! Chipped bill a-e all, she is here without questions,
and seems to be in good standing with ♂461. 9524
Metal/ probably seen as well. However, no evidence of ♂307
who was suffering from a bad leg in June.
Why is ♂461 now so happy to let these two additional
♀ into the group, after all the hassle in the spring?? Ah...
So much to think about...

Seriously, I would have to say that 9523 + 9604
moved here 15 July ± 1 week. My School Hill notes show
that they were there (or at least at Y) until Early July (2 July)
Since they look pretty relaxed +cozy here, I would
have to bet that they've been here a couple weeks. End (115).
