Melanerpes formicivorus
Low Hay
(13 May)
① 21.4 x 17,3 , near runt, somewhat off-center air cell
26.8 x 20,8
(♀524)
Egg-tossing is over here!
0820. Big chase, involving the 2♂8♂ and I believe
1100, ♀523
♀604 once again. ♀509 Green-Dark/Yellow from
looking in,
flies to hole,
♀523 away
ile very hard
♀307 flies
out things broke
immediately
0915 Watching from hide, to make sure both
♀♀ come back to the hole and do not throw the
egg out. 1115 ♀524's been ⚫ in 4 times, ♀523
once for a long visit, No eggs thrown out.
14 May Start from behind hide at 0610. Foggy, blowing
mist. 0614, ♀523 enters nest, ♂307 looks in a few
times 0626 ♀524 enters, ♂461 enters 0627.
0628, ♀523, ♂461, ♀524 all leave in rapid
succession.
0716 ♀524 enters nest, leaves 0717
0720, ♀523 in tree (Blue Oak) adjacent to sap tree,
being mobbed furiously by a pair of Gnatcatchers.
She must be near a nest.
0730, No garricks heard yet this morning. As
♀604 finally throwing in the towel, or is she
just discouraged by the poor weather.
0735, nest check. One new egg, marked #3.
Almost certainly the work of ♀523, since①she was
the only ♀ to be in the hole for any extended
period, ② measurements (26.4 x 20.3) exactly the same
as the egg laid without doubt by ♀523 on 3 May,
