Melanerpes formicivorus
Low Hay
(10 May) reports 6 (!) birds roosted in the hole. One
of the two extras was most likely ♀604, but
the other? ♀587? ♀602?
11 May Start watch 0445 at roost hole. Birds already
have left 0615, moved to watch granary
Behavior data on back. 0720, another very excluded
chase, involving first ♂307 + ♂461, then later
just ♂307, and an intruder that I guessed
was ♀604. Very long, persistent chase, over the
top of Haystack, on the knoll area, etc. Went
on for about 5 minutes
Holes checked 1100-1200. Nothing in the
Blue Oak hole, where I saw some sort of activity
earlier; and in the roost hole there remained the
one egg laid by ♀524 yesterday. Ending 1200
Jazet watching hole in granary, where ♀524
laid this morning (see Walter's notes)
Walked back up here, relieving Walter at 1205,
watching 1980 nest hole with tossable egg.
1743, ♀524 enters; ♂461 looks in, ♀524 leaves 1745
1835 ♀524 enters. ♂523 then enters, ♂461
looks in, at entrance. ♂307 flies to hole,
both ♂♂ side by side at entrance. ♂307 gives
♂461 a gentle but definite peck to the side of
♂461's head. ♂461 turned head slightly, ♂307 flies
off. 1836, ♂461 enters, leaves 1837, then ♀524
leaves, ♂523 heads out. Does not go back down, leaves
