1981 R.L. Mumme 16 Melanerpes formicivorus Low Hay (8 may) or so. And why would she return back and enter the 1980 hole twice later if she had really wanted to lay there? Nobody (except 9604) has shown the slightest interest in that hole in the last few days. Did my disturbance at the graveyard force her to lay there? ② A remote possibility is that 9604 laid the egg yesterday (see Byron's notes), since we didn't check the hole then. Not likely ③ I wonder if 9523 is ready to lay yet? She has not looked at a hole in the last couple of days (to my knowledge) This may prove to be another false start. Mary said that 9524 was down in the roost hole for only 15 seconds. It really sounds like she was just "unloading a mistake." We shall see. I won't be surprised if nobody lays tomorrow. Walter was going to watch the roost hole to determine the fate of the rutt egg (at least, he would watch for an hour or so). ④ I also saw a bird near the Blue Oak hole, some shouldn't ignore that one either. 9 may Start watch for "Roost hole" 0545. 0720 9604 (here garricking Harricking, + drumming as usual) and 9562 Corn-whr/Corn-wht of 1800 have looked in, but that's all. Walter tells me 9524 has laid in the 1980 hole 0800, Checked roost hole. Rutt egg still there! not thrown out. Starting 1315, 1408 9524, then 0746 later, both care 1411. Again 1820. Checked hole, still egg. Nobody roosted in the hole
