Melanerpes formicivorus
Low Hay
2 May Start from hide 0545. Mary watching simultaneously at
the roost hole 0620, 9578 Yellow/whr-cl6,ee,
intruding here from Road 1, drumming in the 2°
granary. 0630 Yikes, Mary tells me that
9523 entered the roost hole and stayed in about 2 minutes
0700 9562 looks into the Blue Oak
hole. 9307 Flies over. All kinds of intruder activity,
no doubt because of 9604 constant garricking.
0810, Nothing has happened here, Nobody's bolted
at any of the 3 likely holes. See bottom of hole.
3 May Start 0650. Garricks from the watch tree
0629 9523 enters 80 hole. Leaves 0640,
Check hole. Hot damn! One egg
most Certainly laid 26.4 x 20.3 9523
Blue-unt DBL, Back in hide 0650
0830, 9524 has looked in 3 times since 0630,
but has not entered. 0850, Relieved by Walter.
Starting watch 1800, after Walter reports 9523's
egg thrown out by 9307 (!!!?), Hard to see anything
in the afternoon sun. At roosting, it looked like 3 birds
were really involved in a tussle of mountings, etc, with
a 4th bird (?) left out nearby.
4 May Start watch 0545. Pre-esting on backs. Nobody laid today,
so yesterday just a false start. 9461 a hot follower of
9524. 9307 seems to be consorting weakly with 9523.
Only highlight was a ferocious chase involving 3 birds (9604,
who was garrickling as usual here, perhaps),
