Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack
22 April Start 1320. 9604 "Red-wnt/B1K" in the 2° (Upper Haystack) area, garriking. The she flies to the "watch" tree, karritts 5-10 times. Definitely not looking great for her. Mary saw her back home at School Hill yesterday. 2 other birds (1a9) in the granary as I arrived, flew off to the 2° area
1410, wandering through the 2° I stumble into 9602 B1K-white B1K-wrt/m karritting from top of the PO-covered Blue Oak near the 2 Valley Oak hole trees + the sap trees (15 meters from 6049)
1445, In the 1° granary for the last ½ hr have been 8307, 8461, 9523, + 9524. All seen pretty friendly. 9602+604 however, are definitely peripheral. Earlier I heard utkts, chatters, &uld and general chasing sound from Far Portuga, once after 9602 had flown over that direction. No interest in any holes, as far as I could tell. Incidentally, the "Tape Hole" in the Valley Oak in the 2° area, has fallen apart.
23 April 9587, of all birds, seen at Gate (see Gate notes).
24 April See SHill notes. 9602 r 9604 "back home" at 1730. Also see Walter's notes.
25 April Start from hide near 2° g 0630. Walter watched here the last two days, when the birds showed interest in the 2 granary holes, plus the Blue Oak hole. 0741, 9524 enters 1979 nest hole briefly (<10seconds). Doesn't go down. Earlier, I can her peek into the 1980 nest hole twice, Never entered.
0800 9524, another long look into the 1980 hole.
0817, Birds off on Far Portuga. Going to look. Back at 0900, 9604 karritting from watch tree (VO 50m uphill of Granary) after being back at SHill last night. Nothing much seen
