1981 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Low Hay 7 April Well, it's not over yet! I see 10 birds flying around when I arrive. well, ♂492 + ♂493 camped out in the secondary granary, 0720. So is ♀601 of Gate ♀587 back in the 1° granary, but not doing any chasing. Hot Damn! All 4 SH ♀♀ are in the 1° granary, chasing other birds. ♂461 right next to ♀523, ♀604, doesn't chase them. ♀623 from 1500 here, being chased in granary. Also ♂562, 1800 in 2° granary. 0745, the SHill ♀♀ have a flm gripon the N side of the 1° granary. The south side seems to be the domain of ♀587, ♀623, ♀NB. The secondary granary has ♂492+493, ♀601, and ♂562 plus a ♂NB lurking about. 0750, ♀587 really whipping upon ♀623 in the S side of the granary. 0803, a new face, ♀565 from 1800, being buffeted around a bit in the N side of the granary, ♀509 seen today as well. 0809, ♀509 chased by ♂307, ♀509 seems to be having the better of a SHill ♀. 0822, ♂492 + ♂493 seem to have retired. 0825, Not so, ♂492 in the top of the 1° granary, now. 0830, 2 ♀NB, a coalition perhaps, peripheral in the broke tree. No aggression. 0840, 1st Cooper's Hawk flies into granary. Complete halt of action.
