Melanerpes formicivorus
Haystack- Blomquist
(19 Aug) of acorns. Cool, foggy morning. 0945, Geez, these birds
never cease to amaze. I track down the &u birds finally
(nobody coming to the granary) at the edge of the field on the
Blomquist Ranch, hanging around the spot where the old dead
tree has fallen across the hog-wire fence. Who should I find
but 9604 Red-wht/BLK and then later, 9523 DBlue-wht/DBlue
Geez Louise! They both looked very cozy with 8173, so
I have to believe that 9484 bit it 10 August ± 1 week
(probably closer to 5 Aug, would be my guess). I very definitely
saw 9484 in the granary 3 Aug, and 99523 ad 604 at Low Hay
that same day. Now, the 99 look comfortable with 8173, I'd
guess that they've been around at least a week. Also, both Juvus
seem to be fine (!) J711 LBlue/Red metal / Red-LBlue Seen very well on
several occasions and I'm pretty sure (not positive) that I
saw J712 as well. If I did, I also got a hint
that J711 77 J712, as the latter seemed to wait until J711 left
before approaching 8173. Interestingly, I did not see the new 99
attted to or feed J711. Only 8173 was taking any interest in
J711. In fact, I saw 9604 peck Lard at juvs at least a couple
of times, ad 9523 (I think) once. What do you know, no
non-kin altruism. It would be good to tie that down. In fact,
that will be extremely important to tie down. Will have to watch
again soon here. Also, I found a sep tree; A live oak, of course
near (15 meters N) of the fallen fence log. End 1020.
22 Aug Watching here 0750. 0930, confusing watch. 8173, 9523, 9604,
and J711 all seen well t.repeatedly. I may yet have to
back down on my report of J712. I did not see him well
